Aug 20
So, weve been spending the last few days taking a tour of the beautiful beaches of this area.  On Tuesday, we spent the day in Cancun.  Although we stayed downtown, its fairly easy to hop a bus to the beach area, which is exactly what we did.  And after sitting out a brief rainstorm, we had a section of the Cancun beach nearly to ourselves.  In the evening, we headed back to the area to do a quick tour of the non-spring break nightlife.

Wednesday, we took the ferry to Isla Mujeres -- a small island right off the coast of Cancun.  Again, the main objective here was to veg on the beach.  For swimming, this one has been tops so far, for its nice calm and clear waters.  There was also a rumor of turtles on this island, and it seemed to be the season for them to either come ashore and lay their eggs, or perhaps it was time for those eggs to hatch into little turtles and swim out to sea.  Either way, the event was said to happen late at night on any one of many beaches, but several hours of seeking information yielded no clear plan for seeing this.  We decided not to take the chance this time, but were hoping for an opportunity later in the trip to see something similar.

Wednesday evening found us arriving in Playa del Carmen.  I must add a quick note here that there is, in fact, a Walmart in Playa -- its right across the street from our hostel.  Even worse than that -- after a month on the road and a number of upset tummies, the concept of a grocery store and a clean kitchen -- all in the same place-- is absolutely fabulous.

Thursday, in keeping with our current plans, we spent on the beach.  Playa is, for both of us, our favorite beach town so far.  Its a good blend of nice beaches, warm water, accessability (something that is hard to come by in Cancun) and a bustling cute but touristy town.  Well be staying here for a bit, and using this as a base for day trips around the area.
