From San Francisco we headed for a planned 6 nights of camping in California. The first 3 nights were at Lake Shasta, created when the Shasta Dam was installed, and providing a huge recreational lake which is used for fishing, waterskiing, jetskiing etc. Some poeple even rent "houseboats" for their vacations, which are huge boats they can drive around the lake whilst living on – up to 12 people can stay on one boat at a time!

We stayed in a small town called Lakehead (population 600), which consists of a few campsites and a market and restaurant serving them. We did have the luxury of wifi at the campsite's shop, and they also had a swimming pool and an outdoor TV area which was opened up when we got to the campsite. We arrived on a Saturday and the campsite was full which was nice - the smell of BBQ drifting by us from every direction! Some people were camping in their huge RV-Type caravans which look really luxurious. One family even had an electric palm tree set up and lit up outside their RV haha. Americans camp in style!

After a decent night’s sleep in our tent we drove to Bailey Cove which had a hiking trail alongside the lake. It was pretty bare and narrow trail on a hill side with a steep drop-off down to the lake on one side and a steep rise covered with trees on the other side. We were paying good attention to where we were walking as a result and then had the shock of our lives when we loked up and saw a wolf about 20metres ahead of us sat right on the trail looking at us. We froze and tried to remember what you’re supposed to do for a wolf encounter! I started yelling at it and moving towards it and thankfully it decided to walk away from us. We started walking back the way we came from thinking we could just wander back to the car, but when we looked back the wolf was right behind us and decided to follow us. I tried to scare him off again so he climbed up into the trees and went around me towards where stanzi was ahead of me! She quickly came back to me and we got back ahead of the wolf. We started back to the car again and the wolf stalked us all the way back! It even came into the car park which was surprising.

Thankfully it didn’t follow us back to our campsite where we had our own BBQ for dinner that night. More campsite burgers – yumsers! We tried to relax that night and watched a bit of The Mentalist on Stanzi’s laptop whist sat in the car... and in the darkness outside a deer crept up looking for food, right next to the car and our tent! We really were in the middle of nature!

The next day we went and hired a small fishing boat with a small 15hp motor attatched to the back of it, and we spent 4 hours boating around the lake and up the Sacremento River. It was really nice and relaxing and a great way to get a suntan! (or sunburnt in my case)

The next morning we left Shasta and headed out for a trip back to the coast through the Trinity National Park.
