Where I stayed
When we arrived at the hostel, we were quickly introduced to Mehmet, the owner of the kebab shop next door. Little did we know we would not be able to leave the hostel without being asked if we were coming to eat at his shop.
The hostel was completely empty except for us. We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the town, which is very cute and full of cafes and restaurants. The town is also full of storks. There are storks and their nests everywhere. Then we saw the Basilica where St. John the Evangelist is supposedly buried.
We had dinner at Mehmet's kebab shop and sampled a few of his meze (turkish appetizers). Then he invited us to come and play backgammon with a few of his friends. In addition to the kebab shop, he also runs the ANZ hostel, so we went to the roof terrace and he taught us how to play. Everyone in Turkey plays backgammon so we were excited to learn the game. We met Borat, Mehmet's friend who worked at the hostel as well. Borat is a shy teenager who does not really speak any english.
When we got back to the hotel, Sarah realized she had left her glasses in Pummakale and was quite upset. She sent an email to the hotel hoping they had found them.
The next morning we went to Epheseus. We have seen a lot of ruins on this trip, but we were still very impressed with the ruins at Epheseus. There is a two story facade of the library that is still intact and very cool. Lindsey's camera ran out of batteries, which was unfortunate because most people cannot work Sarah's camera and we wanted to take some pictures of us together. We defintely had some interesting pictures taken of us.
When we returned Sarah had received an email from the hotel in Pummakale and they said they would send the glasses to her by bus the next day
For dinner we went back to Mehmet's shop and after dinner went again to the ANZ hostel to play backgammon with him and Borat. Things got slightly uncomfortable when Mehment confessed both him and Borat's undying love for us. Borat did not talk at all, but apparently really liked Lindsey and wanted to go buy potato chips with her. Mehmet liked Sarah because they were the same age. Sarah was not so happy with the reason.
The next day Sarah's glasses arrived safely on the bus from Pummakale, and Sarah and Lindsey spent the day at the beach. The beach was windy, which was a welcome relief from the hot turkish weather. That night they were scheduled to take an overnight bus to Istanbul to meet up with Brittany. They decided to split and Ambien to be able to sleep on the bus. Lindsey bit the ambien in half, and it shattered into smaller pieces and a lot of dust. Sarah took some of the smaller pieces, and Lindsey rubbed the dust into her gums. Within 10 minutes she was completely incoherent and kept making some sort of hand sign across her face and asking "why? why?" Luckily the bus came soon after, and she was able to pass out. Unfortunately, we were seated next to a woman, her husband and their young son and the woman threw up for the entire trip. Every hour on the hour, we would wake up to her retching. Lindsey was lucky enough to find another empty seat on the bus, but it was the only other empty seat.
