Where I stayed

We woke up early on June 11th in Mykonos to catch our ferry to Naxos. We all took our multivitamin pills and went to check out.

While at reception, Sarah started to dry heave and had to run out to the bushes. Everyone, especially Brittany and Lindsey began to mock her weak stomach. Mykonos is known as a big party island, and there was a 9 am bus so tons of people were waiting outside the reception area. I'm sure they all thought she was hung over. Especially when 30 seconds later, Brittany also had to run out of reception to puke in the bushes.

Hung over? Please, we could not afford to buy enough alcohol to be that hungover. The bus to the port than picked us up, and as we were driving down the windy roads, Sarah looked over and noticed Lindsey had turned green. Sarah handed her a plastic bag, but luckily, Lindsey has a stomach of steel and only dry heaved a little bit.

Next time, we will read the instructions that read "Take with Food." Then again, food is a luxury item that we don't always have, and we wanted to lighten our pack by taking the vitamins.

After that rough start we got on the high speed ferry to Paros, where we switched to the low speed ferry to Naxos. We once again negotiated a price for a room, but this time, instead of a mesh box fortified with sticks, we ended up at the classy Pension Irene II where we had a balconey, swimming pool, air conditioning, kitchen, private bathroom and a MAID! As if that all wasn't enough, Pension Irene is run by a cute Greek woman, Irene, who gave us free ice cream. Her favorite was Jon, and she even gave him juice in an effort to win his affections. Lindsey is beyond jealous.

The first day we relaxed around the bug-free pool and made ourselves a delicious greek orzo salad. Our lovely dinner was interuppted by an angry british man because we were too loud for him to be able to concentrate on his needlepoint project. Seriously.

The second day we rented our bikes from Nikos and Nikos Junior. We spent the day scooting around the mountain villages of Naxos. First we stopped in Hailki, where they brew Citreon, a Greek liqueor distilled from the leaves of citrus fruits. It comes in 3 varieties- Green is the sweetest, Clear the middle, and Yellow the strongest. In the picture, we each point to our favorite variety.

Then we continued up to Filoti for a lovely lunch, where we met Irene II. Again, she loved Jon the most and gave him giant beans and cold fresh water (another luxury on our trip). Lindsey sat and seethed through lunch.

That night we ate our leftovers accompanied by some wine, and the night of mayhem began. We went to the beach to drink a 1.5 liter bottle of wine. The wine on Naxos is not in glass bottles, but rather poured into reconstituted plastic water bottles. Check out our pics for a visual. We then met a group of girls from Washington DC, Australia (wish we had a picture- she had a 80s side ponytail and a ruffled cheetah skirt) and Scotland. They were on a larger budget than us, so we had a few beers in the park with them, and then they headed for actual bars.

We wandered around town asking the locals where the hopping destinations were. They pointed us toward Prime. We walked into Prime, which was already pumping some jamming tunes and bought one beer. The DJ took notice of our amazing dancing, and asked us to start requesting our favorite beats. We were not shy with our requests or our dancing. He loved us so much he sent a round of free drinks. We then met an older British woman who could keep up with us, and we befriended her and her boyfriend. Then Kelly met her Greek boyfriend. Zorba. We don't have too much to say about Zorba except that Sarah set them up very slyly with the old, "Hi, are you Greek? Do you speak English? Meet my friend Kelly."

The next day we spent relaxing on the beach (except for Kelly who relaxed in bed, but don't worry, not with Zorba) and went to Plaka for a lovely mexican dinner at Picasso. We watched the sunset and devoured the nachos. We needed to carbo load for our big hike that was coming.

The next day we took our scooters up to the base of Mt. Zeus, the highest peak in the Cyclades. We started off walking up a paved road, and thought it wouldn't be so bad. Then the paved road turned into a rock path, then a dirt path, then just rocky and then a rock slide. The path was not actually a path,  but rather a few piles of stone every 100 feet to let you know where you might not die. The climb took us 2.5 hours. We met a couple on the way that disappeared before we got to the top. We were climbing with them, sat down for a 5 minute break and never saw them again.

At the top, Jon broke out his speedo. There isn't much to say, I think the pics speak for themselves.

The climb down was also very difficult. The rock slide was a scree slope so it was impossible to get footing, and the whole mountain was overgrown with cactii so there was no where to get a handhold. At the base of the mountain, 5 hours after we started, we met a very nice south african couple, who gave us three phone numbers to call in case we need anything while there.

On the way back down from the mountain we stopped at Irene 2's again, and continued to bat her eyes at Jon. Jon and Lindsey went on date night, and Sarah Brittany and Kelly had gelato for dinner.

Our final day in Naxos we spent relaxing on the beach. The sand was whipping in our eyes, so we came back to the pool. We made dinner, Lindsey made a bruschetta inspired by date night, and then we went to the temple of Apollo to watch the sunset. On the way back we stopped at Prime, and to our delight, the DJ recognized us, and sent over another round of free drinks. We rewarded him with more dancing.
