Mykonos Camping

We got up early to catch the ferry to Mykonos. Although we left about an hour and a half before the ferry was due to depart, Lindsey's "short cut" ended up costing us 20 minutes, so we barely made it before the boat left.

The ferry cost more than we expected, but it was beautiful and relaxing. The water in Greece is so clear and blue, and the boat was sailing through hundreds of tiny islands. We laid out on on the deck and caught up on our reading and journaling.

When we arrived at the dock of Mykonos we were greeted by tons of people from hotels and pensions bargaining for our business. We ended up with a deal right on the beach. A bungalow for 5, 5 euros a night per person.

Well, we  thought it was a deal. The location was absolutely amazing, and if our pile of sticks with a mesh roof had HAD a window, it would have been a great view. Every day when we returned to our bungalow, there was a new coating of sawdust on our beds. The door had a crack the size of montana to let all the bugs in. But it was 5 Euros a night, so what can you expect?

The first night was a full moon, so we decided to attend the famous full moon party on the beaches of Mykonos. The only problem was, the party wasn't actually on the beach, it was on a club with windows to the beach, and it cost 15 Euros to get in.

We were not paying 15 euros. We had an alternate plan.

Brittany was tired, so Lindsey Jon Sarah Kelly and our new friend Andrew the Aussie (aka the love of Kelly's life) decided to pretend we were on Seb's list. We don't know who Seb is. We almost made it in the club, Kelly was talking to the bouncers, and we got as far as the door. Sarah even got a stamp on her hand, but unfortuantely, they stopped us on the way in and found a bottle of vodka in Jon's backpack. So instead of attending the full moon party we sat on the beach, outside the club with the bottle of vodka and made our own full moon party complete with a late night dip in the Aegean sea.

The next day we woke up with our legs completely covered in bug bites. Sarah and Kelly's were the worst. Sarah's legs swelled up and were a complete mess. Kelly could not stop itching herself. We limped around, completely defeated. Mykonos was ruined. The picture we included on the blog does not even come close to doing our bites justice- even now, as we're writing 5 days later, they have still not gone away. We went to the pharmicist and wish we could have captured his complete look of disgust and horror when he saw our legs. He gave us cortisone cream and the greek version of benadryl (we think, the label is completely in greek, so we don't know what we're taking)

We rented 3 scooters to scoot around the island. Lindsey Brittany and Jon had some trouble communicating when they tried to ask if the scooters were automatic or manual. They were talking about the transmission, but the scooter guy thought that by "automatic" they meant the scooters would drive themselves. He almost didn't let them take three scooters.

On  the drive home Jon almost killed himself. It was determined that Kelly, Lindsey and Brittany would be the drivers, and Sarah and Jon the passengers. Kelly was only not hungover when she was driving her scooter The scooters were one of the highlights of our mykonos trip. We loved going up and down the hills, and driving through the tight winding streets. We stopped at the fruit stands and beaches along the way. We also looked longingly at the beautiful places we could not afford to stay.

Lindsey and Jon went on a date night to a small greek fish restaurant on the beach. Unfortunately, as they were trying to leave they discovered they were out of gas. They couldn't call the campsite to tell us they were stranded, all the gas stations were closed and it was really dark out. Luckily, the staff was very helpful, and one kind man came running back in, all googly-eyed with two solo cups filled with gasoline. He had siphoned the gas from his own scooter to help them out.

The next day we went to Delos, a small island off the coast of Mykonos. In the 6th and 7th century BC Delos had been the economic and spirtual center of Greece. Now, no one lives there, and there are only ruins from the ancient civilization. The most famous monument on the island are the Delos Lions, stautes that lined the roads into the ancient marketplace.

Our last day in Mykonos we spent relaxing by the pool and eating our favorite snack- crepes. The waitress at the pool made us buy drinks to continue to sit there, and the DJ at the pool was dropping some "mad beats." There was some amazing spoken word house music being played all day at the pool. The lyrics are not even appropriate for this blog because our mothers are reading it :)

We went into town to arrange our ferry to Naxos and were once again disappointed by lonely planet's lack of accuracy. The ferry tickets were 20 euros more expensive than we had been led to believe. We soothed our budget woes with a 6 pack of Mythos (1.2 beers per  person) and two free shots from our finger tattooed aussie friends. While in the club we experienced some of the famed Mykonos nightlife, and found it was too euro-trash for our tastes. We preferred sititng on the beach outside the bars having our own fun.
