We left Vancouver on time with a stuffed plane. Holy Sardine Can Batman!! The seats are so close together I think Asian people would be cramped, let alone MOI!!! I was joking with the people I was sitting with, that if they opened the doors now, the whole plane would go SPRONG!!!!  I understand that Cathay Pacific wants to transport as many people as possible, but crap... that was tight.  Their seats do not recline either.  That does have a good point as the person in front of you does not invade your space but since you cannot recline, you slide your butt forward and the whole chair moves forward, therefore you are slouching.  We all stated we had 'numb bum' in places we didn't realize it could go numb!!  Other than the very, very cramped quarters, the service was great.  When we got on the plane in Vancouver, there were several people from New York..which means, they had the 5 hour flight to Vancouver & then the 14 hour flight to Hong Kong....and in a sardine can no less.  I had checked out the price to upgrade to Business Class & for the Vancouver-Hong Kong-Vancouver portion only, it was going to be an extra $7,400.  Are we ever glad we didn’t go for it.  When we boarded the plane we walked through 'Business Class’ and the seats were really tiny (that should have been our indication that Steerage Class was going to be tight) I would have been really ticked if we had paid the extra for such small seats.  I have no idea how the people from New York endured the 19 hours.

We had a great supper (at 6 a.m. Wpg time).  We had a choice of Salmon, Beef Stir Fry or Pasta, with a prawn salad, dinner roll & chocolate cake for dessert.  Half way through the flight, they came around with chicken noodle soup.  It was great, but they only gave us a pair of chop sticks to eat the soup with! Now that was a challenge.  Bernie, the gentleman that was sitting beside me, had a heck of a time, but he & the rest of us got through it.   Jack noticed that the dairy products on the flight were quite international.  We had coffee creamers from New York, Hong Kong & from Island Farms Dairy (B.C.) & the butter was from Denmark.  The entertainment system was great.  There were several movies, TV shows, Games, etc.  Also, a map of our route & an outside, on the underside, camera.  Our route was very interesting.  We went all the way up the Alaska coast, over to Russia, down between Japan & China, straight to Taipei, made a hard right & then into Hong Kong. It really seemed to be the long way around.   The camera was fascinating when we were landing.   We saw a lot of freighters in the harbour & watched as the wheels came down and the approach to the runway, then the smoke of the tires hitting the runway as we landed.

Once we got to Hong Kong we had to go through a check point on our way to Beijing.  At the check point the guy checking our boarding passes had never seen a boarding pass that was printed on a private computer printer before, so he sent us back to the Dragonair counter for one of their printed boarding passes.  Oh well, no big deal, but come to find out he did not realize that our boarding pass had a scanable  bar code on it and he could have accepted it in the first place.  After that episode, we had to go back through security & then on to our flight to Beijing.

Dragonair (Airbus 330) is not quite as cramped as Cathay Pacific (Boeing 777), & their seats do recline..who hooo!!! They fed us breakfast and gave us the choice of Dim Sum or an omelet.  We both chose the omelet and were happy with our choice.  We talked to a couple of ladies that had the Dim Sum & one really liked it & the other said it was too fishy.  Once we landed in Beijing, we had to go through a couple of check points, one of which was temperature control.  Both Jack & I took a couple of Advil’s about an hour before we landed so we were not worried.  Nobody got pulled over, so we really didn’t have anything to worry about.
