We rolled
into Marathon, TX. Population 400. We pulled over at the visitor center and
started taking pictures of the old run down houses, the landscape, rusty cars
and the sign to Big Bend National Park.
This part
of Texas really is different.
The roads
were completely deserted when we first drove in. Then one large white SUV drove
past. Then a second. As the third drove past, I saw the vehicle was marked
Border Patrol with a green stripe down the side. In the next fifteen minutes,
three more SUVs and pick-up trucks idled past us. Didn’t think about it for
more than two minutes, but as we got back on the road towards Alpine, four
border patrol cars were pulled over not more than a ¼ mile down from where we
had been taking our pictures. They were clearly watching us. Guess there aren’t
too many Priuses from Maryland.
Immigration is a whole different animal down here.
