We knew we had to go to Marfa. Contemporary art. Yeah we’d heard about that and sleeping
in a teepee. The rest of what we were supposed to do was fuzzy.

At Don’s Automotive in Austin, our mechanic
Tony told us that his stepsister was launching her store, Velvet Antler, and
that we had to check out the grand opening celebration. Alright add that to the
list.

Little did
we know that we were walking into Williamsburg West. The scene the conversation and the activities were pretty much the same as a weekend in Brooklyn with better light and more cowboy hats.

Arriving at the Velvet
Antler we were greeted like old friends, offered wine,  and fed delicious snacks. We spoke to a
volunteer firefighter who regaled us with tales of fighting the fires that rage
in the mountains. We discussed Knit Collage yarn with a craft artist. On the
way out, we spotted someone in an Orioles hat and the Baltimore connection was
made.

This led us
to a poetry reading at the Marfa Book Shop by Orlanda White, the Navajo poet
currently holding the Lannan Foundation residency, but better yet was the
post-reading dinner, catered by Food Shark. It was free and the best meal we’ve
had on the trip yet. Gorgeous house.  Interesting literary and artistic
company.

Life is good in Marfa.
