After the Janis symposium I boarded the Outback and headed towards South Bend, IL.  Now I knew I wasn't going to make it all the way there, just wanted to get out of Cleveland in that inbetween area where you can find some cheap hotels because your not quite in the "city" and not quite anywhere really.

I drove for about an hour or so.  I could actually see the light pollution dissipate and the stars brighten up.  At the same time the road does get a little scary with no lights. Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin scary.  There are some patches with just no lights in sight.

Soon it was time to stop and I decided to use the GPS' "Lodging" feature to find me my home for the night.  Out there in the perimeter delays in updates persisted so everytime I thought I was going to stop, I'd driven past the suitable place lately suggested.

I found a Comfort in and managed to finangle another discount on the room.  Me and the hotel desk gal decided that I was a government worker so I received a nice chunk off the top. I nodded off with South Bend, IN and a visit to the University of Notre Dame.

Up way early, I started looking ahead to my visits.  South Bend then Chicago.  Any good shows.
Here's where Devo fit in.

Along the way to South Bend I needed to do some car camp keeping.  Emptying the ice turned water from the cooler and re-icing my drinks.  A little grocery shopping and such.  I also went shopping at Dick's for a new pair of hikers.  My Merrill Mocs are wonderful but, I have worn them into the ground in just about a year.

The Dick's people were that midwestern too nice.  It's a good nice it just inspires a personal curiosity of where that comes from.  That genuine willingness to help and perhaps even have a chat.  The majority of the Midwesterners I've met represent these characteristics.

The hikers didn't fit me so well and you could see the sincere disappointment on the ther mugs when I didn't buy them.  They were very very good hearted people.

After these interludes with the local peoples It was on to UND.
