Easter Sunday but it's cold as Christmas with temperature a little above freezing.Feeling a bit stupid having decided to visit California in Spring to hit some decent weather-notice that the weather in Chicago is mid 20's Celsius-should have thought about this more...
Tom and I chilled out this morning. He's exercising like a dervish and getting in great shape,me drinking black coffee by the pint and e-mailing in lieu of phone calls as there's no mobile signal anywhere around here and the two public pay phones at the motel are out of action.Looks like the type of place where things move slow.Tom's asked both evening's so far what the fish of the day is in the local restaurant and the answer's been Snapper...he thinks it's always Snapper.I think he's right.
Drove 35 miles to the edge of Yosemite near Mariposa to hike up to a Sequoia Grove. It's the world's tallest tree and a very impressive sight, particularly once fallen as the root structure is huge, reminding me of the set on the Aliens films.
Elevations on this section of the Sierra Nevada rose to 6,000 feet, but the hike was straightforward-we did about 6 miles, and Tom ran the bulk of the descent to the car.By which time the snow was coming down and settling fast(no gritting lorries here).Totally unprepared(I'd refused Tom's offer of gloves earlier in the day)I was asked by a Park Ranger if we had Tire(Snow)Chains.Held back the laughter answering 'no' and was allowed on my way but was seriously worried for a while on the journey back, crawling up and down dale at low speed with the snow settling very fast.
Back at base settled in to watch the second match in the Ladies NCAA basketball tournament and got more involved than I thought possible, cheering on the underdogs(Baylor)against the long unbeaten favourites(Connecticut)-despite a second half rally by Baylor UConn won setting up a top team final with Stanford.Am I going native?...

Loving the travel -blog, particularly the food-detail, and it's triggering great memories of my California honeymoon. Please can we have weigh-in updates for both parties? Back at the ranch, we are in full Delia & Heston swing (week 4 and going well), and west London skies are blissfully quiet while all flights over UK airspace are cancelled due a volcano in Iceland. Rupert is currently stuck in Portugal and not likely to get back till 27/4! Hope you escaped Yosemite in one piece and look forward to reading the next installment... Sx
Just updated myself on your blog. I bet the snow was a shock will there likely to be any more.
Had a text from Jane on Saturday to see they were stuck in Joberg because to the volcano and it had been suggested they would be stuck there until next weekend. I don't suppose you can do a detour..............
Love to you both.
