Our brief stay in Reyjavik soon came to an end but we loved every minute of it. It was sooooo cold though, as you'd expect, but windy too making it not that comfortable to be outside. We were excited to be going to New York for the New Year although with mixed feelings - we booked the trip before 9/11 and now we were very aware that the atmosphere in the city would be mixed sadness, caution and looking to the future.
The first thing we noticed though was just how more laid back the people were and perhaps friendlier. Of course the time of year affected it but on the whole we thought people were a little less rushed and took the time to advise and almost protect us. From leaving the airport where the guard insisted we put our passports in a safe place before he let us out of his sight to people physically stopping us from crossing the road and making us cross with them when it was completely safe. The vibe was very different, subdued but definitely mixed with something else.
