Pristina and Kosovo were always going to be a slight encumbrance on our travel plans, firstly due to the fact we'd have to leave Serbia, re-enter and leave again on our way to Macedonia due to visa requirements, as well as the fact that the roads are purportedly marred in pot holes, notoriously slow and difficult to navigate as well as a host of other issues. But - We decided we'd fight through all this, being the champions we are, and visit the controversially independent state to see what all the fuss was about.

So, we drove on, adding 2hrs to our initial journey time and leaving the nice clean highway connecting Beograd and Skopje to traverse the country roads towards the Kosovo border. After a confusing hour and a half wait to clear said border, we finally made it to the dead-mans land between Serbia and Kosovo, which unlike most countries - being nothing but a big open field - was in fact a tight rocky alleyway covered in barbed wire and surrounded by men brandishing modern-day AK's. Once reaching the other side we were kindly asked to show our insurance documents. Normally not an issue, we were informed that they would not recognise our car coverage and that although we only wished to enter the country for a few hours to have dinner and see the city we'd need to buy a weeks worth of insurance at a mere 40 Euro. Ever the wallet-concious travellers, we opted for Option B - turning around - only to go through the exact same checks and scrutiny at the Serbian border we enjoyed 30min previously (whilst they laughed at our quick retreat from Kosovo - something they see far too often I'd say). Add another 2hrs getting back to the highway and this is the way we spent our afternoon "visiting" Kosovo. Not a great success.
