For the benefit of saving a few pesos, we elected to turn a simple day trip to Ulm (in search of an Auto), into an epic journey of tormented sleep on cold tiled floors with drunken Bayerners.

A trip which would normally be a leisurely 4hr train ride, was transformed to 10hrs, 4 change-overs (including a bus trip), and a stop-over at München Hbf (2.5hrs) and Augsburg (3hrs). Being an overnight train, these stop-overs were at 12am and 2am respectively, and saw us have the wonderful pleasure of trying desperately to get some sleep on the freezing floors of these train stations, which did not feature seats or heating, but did contain a lot of drunk kids, club revellers ending their night, closed stores (so drinks and food were not an option) and worn-out travellers affected by the volcano. The mood was far from rosy, but we persevered to spend a day finding out that the cars we sought out on the internet were in terrible condition, and that everything else in the parking lot was out of our price range.

We did cap off the day with a great dinner at a Greek restaurant (thanks to the Kasberger's) which included plenty of red wine and free shots of Ouzo, giving us the ability to sleep peacefully on the ride home (which took less than 5hrs door to door).

The hunt for an Auto will continue, and i'm sure this will not be the last overnight train we take to save some money (even if it means a bit of local travel takes longer than the trip from SYD to BKK). We will remember to carry a bottle of Vino next time though.
