Well I have recently been told that I have commited a sin by not drinking beer in Bavaria. Sorry to beer lovers the world over! I do like your beer houses and gardens though. There is definatly a real way of life that revolves around beer drinking in Munich. And for a people to be so passionate about something I think is admirable. I think it might take me so training to ever managed to drink more than a few mouthfuls of the stuff. The yeasty taste is too much for me I am afraid. Anyway Munich is another city that is not really what I was expecting. It really is what someone described it to me as, a large village. The buildings are pretty monumental in scale and the streets are wide and user friendly. I must watch out for the cyclists though because I have a habbit of walking on their bike lanes - sorry. The streets appear very purposefully planned on the whole - perhaps a result of post war reconstruction planning. This level of deliberate city planning is very obvious because it feels a bit artificial but this I find is ballanced out but little quirky things. For example the shops in Munich seem to be in competition to produce the most random, odd and cheap shop displays. Being in the lead up to Easter the themes are of course chickens and eggs on the whole.
There are quite a few nice restaurants that are not too pricey and actually produce decent meals. There are alot of independent interesting shops and art galleries out side of the very central chain store shopping area. In the center of the city everyone in Munich appears to be out shopping. I am told it is a favorite pass time for the locals. There is also a strip of designer shops that cater for the rather well off Munichans - which I am told there are plenty of. I also really like the markets that sells fresh foods of which mostly appears to be very good quality. Cheese, Olives, Breads etc...
We spend a bit of time wandering the english gardens and along the river. The snow is gone and the sun is out which is very lovely. The trees are all bare still but some of the bushes are starting to blossom which is very exciting. The gardens are mainly tree lined avenues and open grassy fields. Not as wild as Richmond Park though by any means. We only really get around about 1/2 of it which is plenty to keep a few decent hours occuplied. In the gardens there are several beer gardens of various sizes which would make a very wonderful place to be in the summer sunshine.
I plan to get to all 3 art galleries but due to some late nights and sleep in's there really isn't time for them all so we only go to the Modern Art Gallery (hot tip is that it is only 1 Euro on Sundays!). It just means I will one day have to return to compete it all. What a shame!
