Wow! Other side of the border is another world! After spending the last 2 hours in Bolivia bumping around on a beast of a bus (took 5 minutes to stop) it was absolute luxury to get into an airconditioned bus with huge comfy seats. The downside? No more $1 per hour of travel. More like $1.50 - $2. But they are very nice! I can see us doing a few overnight trips here...

Easiest border crossing ever, even skipped the huge queue of locals lining up for bagage checks.

Warning - siestas are serious. We walked into a bakery (the door was open, stacks of food on the shelf, it was lunchtime) and we were told it was closed!

Hopped on a bus to Tilcara, 4 hours including the passport/baggage check within half an hour of leaving the border. How not to get searched: be female, white and holding a copy of Voltaire's "Candide".

Instead of going in to the town we were dropped off on the highway, with no map, but it is a small place and the people are friendly. Found a cheap hospedaje near the bus terminal, after walking the wrong direction. Favourite thing - supermarkets with variety! Even though they were small. Cute town, interesting canyon formations around. I went to the ruins which were interesting but not particularly spectacular.
