A big day of walking. We started at the Colosseum - we still marvelled at it even though we'd seen it before, then past the Arch of Constantine and Palantine Hill to Circus Maximus. There's really nothing there now apart from the raised section in the middle but I just thought of "Ben Hur" and recreated the whole scene in my head. We then walked along the Tiber River crossing Ponte Fabrico and Ponte Sisto to Campo di Fiore for lunch and a stroll through the markets.
Next stop was Castel San Angelo which was an interesting look at the papal rooms and secret passageways.
Then the Vatican. Awesome! This time we climbed to the cupola(Dome) of St Peters which took us up 551 steps to the very top. It had narrow, narrow steps that spiralled upwards and the passageway was only body width and the steepest staircase right at the top. It was an awesome sight. Craig wasn't sure he could do it since it was so high but he managed and was pretty proud of himself. We have now been to the depths of the vatican last time with the excavations tour and now to the top of it. We then came down which brought us out inside the basilica and marvelled yet again at the unbelievable riches and opulence of the church.
This was our last full day in Rome and the end of the school excursion. It's really been great.
