After 5 takeoffs and 5 landings in 17 hours I finally arrived at Rio de Janeiro. I did have a bit of a snooze between Lima and Santiago, but it is certainly not an easy way to travel.

I signed up for Rio by Day from Grayline before arriving in Brazil. It was a disappointing start as the first place they brought us to was an souvenirs shop followed by some hard sell of the DVD they produced and filmed us on. We eventually went to Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) where there was a spectacular panoramic view of the city. After lunch the tour continued to Rio┤s downtown region. The bus traveled past all the usual city lankmark eg museums, government house, state library etc. It also went to Sambˇdromo (Samba Open Air Parade) It looks like part of a standium but just along a street! We stopped at the metropolitan Cathedral which is an odd looking conical shaped building for a cathedral. It may look weird from the outside but from the inside it is absolutely beautiful. We took a cablecar ride to the Sugerloaf and spotted some SagŘi Monkeys on the way. At the top of the Sugarloaf we watched the sunset over a very cloudy sky.

I celebrated my birthday with a sleep in! I was initially wanting to do something exciting like hang gliding but after checking the weather forecast I thought thunderstorm and hang gliding would not go well together. Funny enough after waking up every late in the morning I was greeted with a beautiful blue sky and clam condition. But it was too late to organise anything. I got to chill out a bit, firstly at the roof top pool at my beach front hotel then down the Copacabana beach. The water from the beach was a bit colder than I expected. for the evening I went to Plataforma for an entertaining show. It was a taste of what to expect during the Carnaval.

Today I will head to Campo Grande. It will be an interesting leg of my South America trip as I have nothing booked in term of tours, accomodation, transport to the next destination Foz do Iguašu. How difficult could it get? Time will tell!
