Good Lord, the crowds are overwhelming. The newspaper said there were 1.9 million people in Tian' Men Square on Monday, more on Tuesday, with the other attractions in Beijing being comparable. Today, we went to the Olympic stadium. The construction site in HUGE, and not much is there at least complete. The stadium is done on the outside and the "bubble" building is done. (Swimming venue) Olympic Village is under construction and the hotels around the site have a long way to go. If any country can pull it together in 11 months remaining, the Chinese can and will.
We went over to the Summer Palace and couldn't even get near the place. Busses were double parked; taxis were thick and it was awful just on the outside. I didn't want another day wiggling like fish in the seafood market! Then I got to thinking, would the Great Wall be just as crowded? We were scheduled to tour there in the hotel car on Thursday for a cost of about $500. Did I want to put out that kind of money? Did I want to have to use filthy bathrooms that I would have to use in the 6 hour trip? no no no
So, I said to Ken, let's go home. So we did. In 45 minutes from returning to the hotel, we were on the way to the airport. We had about an hour of waiting in lines to go through customs; change our ticket; and general micky mouse things. We only had an hour wait at the gate before boarding our flight to Vancouver. The flight was fairly empty, so we were able to spread out over several seats for extra space. We landed in Vancouver, picked our car up at the long term parking, and headed for Summer's to get our babies. As we got closer to Oak Harbour, we could not stay awake. I prised my eye lids open to see Ken weaving about while driving. That scared me awake! We kept talking until we got to a motel, registered and went to bed.
I had called Summer to tell her we would have to pick them up in the morning. She had to be off for work by 6:45....no problem for us, we would probably be up at 3 AM! Sure enough, it was 3:15 and we were both awake. Summer had visitors on her door step about 5:45 who were lurking like peeping toms outside. Beau and Nessa recognised us pretty much right away; Cori was baffled and kept jumping on Summer. She realized who we were about 5 minutes later and couldn't give us enough kisses!
The drive home seemed like forever. I just wanted to get to my own bed and snuggle down with the dogs.
