After our "exciting" one night stay in Frankfurt we caught a bus to Koblenz then decided (well I did, Ken tagged along) to go on a river cruise from Koblenz to Mainz through the Rhine Valley ... there were loads of castles, fields, castles, fields ... oh and some castles and fields to see. Once again it cost us an arm and a leg but I really enjoyed the trip and Ken enjoyed the beer drinking so that was the main thing.

We decided to take a late afternoon trip from Mainz to Heidelburg and what a mission it turned out to be!!! We missed our train by literally 5 seconds and had to wait for an hour for a slower train which meant we ended up in Heidelburg two hours after we were originally going to. We then found ourselves at about 10 pm trying in vein to find the right tram/bus to our "way out of town" hostel (the things you do to save a buck by booking cheap accommodation!!) and after finally finding the place we had to lug our gear up to our separate rooms where everyone was already asleep ... bugger! I then had to struggle with the sheets and doona cover (because you have to make your own bed in these cheap hostels) in the dark and stopped to tell off a few kids running and screaming down the corridor whilst everyone else was trying to sleep ... what a mistake!!! All I wanted to do was crash in bed and sleep but these kids took it upon themselves to make sure I didn't. The little buggers started running, stomping and screaming louder than ever and then some other ning nongs decided to start playing ping pong at 11.30 pm right outside my window and (as if things weren't bad enough) the men's shower was located right beside my room and some very loud and inconsiderate blokes decided to take a midnight shower ... great!!! Needless to say I was a little disgruntled the next morning especially when I found out that Ken had a brilliant night's sleep and we (mostly I) decided to skip going in to visit the city (which I kinda regret now because Heidelburg is meant to be very pretty and it's castle very spectacular) but I'd had enough of the town so we took the first train out of it down to Frieburg where things got worse before they got better!!!

To be continued ...
