We found ourselves in the relaxing village of Cesky Krumlov per the recommendation of one of Creighton's section-mates from Prague. He described the village as a relaxing, small-town retreat, and we were not disappointed. We arrived mid-day, dropped our bags off at the hostel, and grabbed lunch along the winding Vltava riverbank. We had good food and locally brewed beer and enjoyed great views of the town castle and watching kayakers and rafters go over the river rapids nearby. We were thinking of finding some kayaks ourselves, until an afternoon shower broke out. Then, we were perfectly content sipping beverages and watching the drenched kayakers float by and cautiously attempt the now faster-flowing rapids. After a quick shower, it turned into a beautiful afternoon and we roamed the lazy village before catching a well-deserved siesta after the prior evening’s unwelcome late-night hostel festivities. After a few hours, we were ready to explore again. We ventured out for dinner, stopping first at the local tavern, Krcma Barbakan, to sample the honey wine recommended in our map. Upon inspecting the menu, we realized we were in for a daunting task as there were five different flavors, each served hot and cold: traditional mead, old Czech, cinnamon, walnut and almond. The waiter narrowed down our choices a little, noting they were out of two of the flavors. He said the other three flavors were equally good and hot/cold was a personal preference. Thus, we were forced to sample a variety and each sampled a different flavor both hot and cold. We both preferred cold to hot and Kelly liked almond the best. We rounded out our stop at Cesky Krumlov with a river-side dinner at Lazebna watching the sun set over the castle.
