After managing not only the most efficient and comfortable train from the airport and a taxi it then starts a massive thunderstorm. But not European style rain but proper Monsoon rain...the type where it gets you soaked in 5 mins flat. Even more fun trying to avoid the puddles with my new and exciting backpack. I basically hibernated as soon as I got the hostel before trying to work out the logistics of the shared bathrooms. A new thing in Malaysia is the choice between Western toilets and Squat toilets in every place so there is one of each. Wow choices!
The next day I ventured out in the humidity to try and get some stuff to actually fill the backpack that I now own. I was in Western heaven...coffee bars, shops that don't consider size 12 to be XXL and people who speak English! But even I got bored after going past every single shop in a massive shopping mall on an unsucessful attempt to replace my sports kit at less than twice the price I would pay for it at home. I decided to head to the Perhentian islands and realised pretty quickly why everyone copes with the extra weight of a lonely planet when trying to plan my trip. Looking at 4 websites and trying to collate the info took an hour when it would have taken 5 mins in a lonely planet. Though I have found out that pages of the lonely planet are on google books.
I had to do a dry run to the train station to buy my train ticket after the receptionist had told me that the bus took an hour when the lonely planet said 10 hours. Mmmm! One of those miscomunication things which usually results in me being the wrong side of the city as my bus leaves. I was pretty nervous getting the train at 8 pm as I was the only white person. Not just white solo female, traveller, or any other white kind of person. So getting stared at was kind of expected. Thankfully I had a top bunk and was surrounded by a family and all the beds have curtains. I woke up at every stop to make sure my backpack hadn't been taken off the train. But the bed was really comfortable and the temperature nicely controlled by aircon.
In the morning I awoke to the famous Jungle railway. We were basically travelling through the trees and I had an uninterupted view of the tree tops. It was the most scenic train ride I have ever been on. I wasn't sure when I was supposed to be getting off so was popping down the ladder every 10 minutes in case it was the stop. Unfortunately my skills on climbing up and down bunk bed ladders have grown rusty in the 10 years I haven't been on one. So it was like an ungraceful whale motion to get down. When I got off the train there were loads of touts and I was getting a lot of attention so I saw a group of girls with backpacks infront of me and just asked to join their group and get a taxi to the pier with me. I have no shame these days if it is easier and cheaper!
Oh yeh and I forgot to mention the masturbating naked hobo I 'found' on the streets of KL. Basically was walking to try and find the shopping mall and as I come around the corner I see someone lying on the ground but don't think much of it. Then as I get closer I realise he is not only naked but also very happy to see me. Why oh why I ask myself does this kind of thing only happen to me? I am CERTAIN not many other people walking around KL get this kind of 'view'! Just another of those travelling experiences ... one I hope never gets repeated!

You sound on top of the world, you have conquered trains alone and had a fantastic train journey through the canopies of the jungle after shopping ...What more could a girl need, travel and western shopping hehe :oP

What was the stop you got off at ..where are you now? Did you keep in contact with any of the girls from the taxi?

As for us over in England .. I am going to try and get a load of interesting sites packed into the next week, so will post photo's as and when I get the chance :) Expect .. Kensington Palace, Babylon Roof Gardens, Greenwich, O2, Kew Gardens, and various shots from the river boats I hope to be getting :)

Missing you and hope your having fun x x x

Wow, first signs of civilisation! :-)

I bet the gleaming lights of Topshop must've brought a nostalgic tear to the eye! In fact I am getting itchy for Oxford St just reading this....

Still, good work for leaving behind the super cute (Helly Kitty) in favour of the unknown ('quaint' jungle shacks). I know where I'd rather be..!

The sleeper train sounds really good fun (top bunk is totally best). Reminds me of Some Like It Hot!

Want to see some proper 'in the jungle' pics next. Go seek out some local wildlife, Mowgli!

xoxo LC

We were reading yesterday about everything that has been happening in Thailand the last 2 weeks and it is pretty scary. I am glad I am out of there. I have no thought about work once except to think how glad I am not to be there! How are things with you?

Hey I stopped off in Kota Baru but will update with more details in the next blog entry. I didn't stay in touch with any of the girls from the taxi as they were 18 and pretty bitchy and dare I say quite dim as well and so so so fresh off the boat. You just don't wear string tops with your bra hanging out and tiny shorts in a Muslim country. Then complain that guys are looking at you!
I am looking forward to the pictures of Blighty! I almost miss it...but wouldn't give up on being here for anything. I think my aunt was right you def get into travelling at the 3 month mark and start to enjoy it. I have to say I have had a fab time in Malaysia so far. Miss you...x x x

LOL I read your entry at work and literally snorted out loud, you are so funny. I can only imagine your facial expression as you realised what he was doing. Dirty man!!

Bit worried John is travelling to thailand atm I hope everything is ok while he is in bangkok!! My mum's daily updates (that had ceased once you left Thailand) have now started again LOL I am trully terrified is it really as bad as it is being made out?

Big hugs nic x
