Never having traveled in New York state outside of Manhattan, I was dazzled by the natural beauty of rural New York. (Of course, my encounter with a roadside frozen coffee drink hut right over the state line didn't hurt my first impression either.) I had registered for a 3-day zen meditation retreat in the Catskills months ago, and was looking forward to it, but also hoping that I would be up to the challenge. John found a beautiful camping site in Catskill State Park, nearby, where I joined him after completing an intense and rewarding 3-days at Zen Mountain Monastery. I hope to return in the not too distant future.
Upon re-entry into the world, I sampled the post-hippie offerings of the crowded, little town of Woodstock, and ended the New York jaunt in Kingston, the original capitol of New York (New Netherland, 1777), where we strolled through the old church cemetery.
