The immensity of the beauty reflected in the landscape between San Simeon and Monterey, California, is unparalleled in my experience. The Pacific Coast Highway wound us over the coastal range to the craggy cliffs that plunge into the Pacific Ocean. The contrasting elements - water, rocks, rolling hills, mountains, vibrant wildflowers, lush green forests- all present at once, evade mental reconciliation, and jar the mind awake. The fog that hovered and shrouded the surrounding peaks, only enhanced the magnetic pull of this region. A few memorable stops included viewing elephant bull seals molting on the beach, surveying the fantastic homes of Carmel by the Sea, and discovering a treehouse beach overlook located directly across from Pfieffer State Park near Big Sur.
