It was a whilstlestop tour of Surfers Paradise - and our last stop in Queensland before heading down to New South Wales and Byron Bay.

We arrived in the afternoon on day 1 and checked into our apartment which was in Southport - a 45 minute walk from Surfers Paradise before heading out to explore this famous surfing town.

Surfers Paradise consistsof the main beach - 75 miles of golden sand and aqua seas (hence the name Gold Coast), a busy road and then the town centre which is full of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.  It was the first time that we saw proper surfery waves, big, crashing waves breaking a few metres from the golden sand, and surfers out of their boards waiting for the 'perfect wave'.  It was a fantastic sight and we spent some time relaxing, watching the waves crashing into the shore and the people being beaten up by the waves in the surf!  After pootling about town and doing a bit of shopping we headed back to Southport and into an Outback Jacks for our favourite chicken burgers - we haven't had one since Townsville and were very excited.  We then retired to the apartment to watch a spectacular thunderstorn with lightening and heavy rain.  Luckily (A) we weren't out in it, and (B), our apartment balcony was covered so we could sit outside and watch the lightening move across the sky and the rain hammer down.

Fortunately the rain cleared up by the next morning and our only full day in Surfers before heading to New South Wales for Christmas.  We walked into town, a good 45 min walk and went to the Sky tower, which was until recently the tallest building in Surfers and provdes 360 degrees panoramic views from the 77th floor across Surfers and Hinterlands, even as far as Byron Bay.  The views were quite spectacular.  After the Skytower we did some shopping before going on the Aqua Duck tour - a 4x4 bus which was based on the amphibius landing vehciles used by the Americans in world war II - so after a tour around the town centre, we went into the water for a river tour which was very cool, and we saw Millionaire's row - some lovely mansions beside the river as well as the Surfer skyline.  We did some Christmas shopping - we'd decided that we wanted to give each other gifts to unwrap of Xmas day, but we were limited to the size of our backpacks - so we went into the local Coles supermarket and spent 10 minutes trying to find some nice things to buy each other :-)  Polar Express was on the telly that evening so we decided that we needed to watch it and order in pizza :-) and do some laundry - and had a lovely chilled out evening.

The weather in Surfers was nice and warm - around 30 degrees, and was quite humid so our clothes were sticking to us quite quickly - and by the end of the 45 minute walk into town - we were quite minging!  A nice town, it is a party place, with lots of 'youngsters' out getting pissed, but with a lovely beach and fantastic surf.  Unfortuantely didn't have time for a surfing lesson - and will hopefully get one in at Christmas at Bryon Bay.
