after a very comfortable night in our dugout we stayed put in the digs - keeping cool and out of the sun. we watched a dvd about coober pedy and the various characters living here- it was part of a tv show broadcast on aussie tv some time ago- very interesting!in the arvo we headed into town and , inspired by the dvd we toured the old timers mine. jim felt a little claustrophobic and hot down there. just as the miners left it, the original mine ever dug for opals in coober pedy still has some of the gorgeous gems still embedded in the sandstone walls for all to see (must be the mine owners pension fund sitting there) - now worth a fortune we can only marvel athow it was found (by accident - a 14 year old boy was looking for water during a gold rush expedition- found opals instead!) - the miners had to dig down about 20 metres and follow the traces in the rock which led to the big finds that still happen today- and its still a very dangerous job too despite all the technology the only way to dig out the decent lumps of opal  is by hand with a pick and shovel! it was also dangerous having a souvenir shop tagged on the end of the mine - very clever! - nattie couldnt resist a silver and opal necklace and bev bought a boulder opal thong necklace. with a few pence left in the kitty w get some steak in the supermarket (even out here steak is cheap- we think its steak anyhow!) to cook on the barbie back at the dugout, after a dip in the unique pool! early to bed tonight tho we have another long drive tomorrow....
