6/19/05 - Today we took the train to Civitavecchia, the port of Rome, to board our cruise ship. As the train entered the station, we queued to exit the train, and found the doors would not open! Erin was banging on the door, and the conductor on the platform just shrugged his shoulders. There were four other passengers on the next car who also could not get off. Unfortunately, we were on an express train, and the next stop was 40 minutes away! We were not quite worried about getting back in time to make the boarding of our ship.
At the next stop, we insisted the train conductor meet us at the doors to ensure our timely departure. Sure enough, the doors would not open. He used a special key to try to reset the doors to no avail. He tried the emergency latch ... no go. He then tried the manual door opener ... still wouldn't open! By this time we are really starting to panic! Fortunately, he had stopped the train with the emergency latch. We had to troop down through three cars before finding a door that would open. Good grief!
The track conductor was so nice ... he ran us up and down the stairs to the proper track, yelled at them to hold the train, and ensured our family was aboard. One of the other passengers from the other group of four also made it aboard. She was quite distraught to find she had left her mother, sister, and aunt at the stop.
We made it to the cruise ship with time to spare. The other three passengers arrived past departure time, but we had warned the cruise staff that they were coming. They had actually already raised the gangplank when they came screeching up in their taxi. They allowed them to board, and the ship set sail.
Tomorrow we will be in the principality of Monaco.
It will be nice to be in one location for a spell. We are getting quite tired of schlepping our bags around.
David and I have a nice cabin with balcony. It is quite spacious for a cruise ship. The girls have a smaller inside cabin, which is still quite large.
More to come ....
