Our last stop in the Great Campervan Road Trip of 2010 was Fiordland, where we were planning to cruise along one of NZ's most beautiful roads and then cruise along Milford Sound. Everyone I'd ever talked to about New Zealand--whether they were Kiwis or fellow tourists--had said that we could see whatever we wanted to see in NZ, but we NEEDED to see MIlford Sound. So we did. And they were right.

Picture-perfect fiordland kept us gasping as we drove and wove around the mountains and through the tunnels. When we arrived at the Sound, we were elated to board our cruise boat. And that experience didn't disappoint, either. We saw the usual seals and waterfalls and mysterious fiords (and those are indeed the "usual"--but gorgeous, still), but we also saw what our captain, himself elated, said was extremely rare: several pods of dolphins who played by our boat for a good half hour. We also saw clear skies, which allowed our boat to drive out farther into the ocean than they typically can go. And we saw rainbows that seemed to sprout from the base of grand waterfalls. It was a jaw-dropping, picture-perfect kind of day.

In the evening, we found a peaceful place to camp by Lake Gunn, and in the morning, Dan skipped stones as the sun rose. As we all hiked, that day, to the Key Summit, we reminisced about the ebb and flow of our adventures--goofy and peaceful, adrenaline-spinning and meditative--and readied ourselves to leave this land for the new paths ahead.
