We left Rome early this morning and travelled to Sienna.

Sienna is in the Tuscany region. It is very beautiful and very green. We passed many vineyards and olive orchards. The hills of Tuscany are incredible. I loved the countryside. We saw villas on the tops of hills and small villages the in valleys.

Sienna has a very famous square in the centre of the city. The bus parked on the outskirts of the downtown square and we walked into the Piazza Campo. I could just imagine the horse race that occurs in city square twice a year.

We had lunch in Sienna. Papa and I ordered a ham, cheese and tomato panini. It was very good. Nan bought a leather bag in Sienna and Papa bought a leather wallet. I got something for my friends. I still haven't bought something for my sisters or my mom and dad.

We got back onto our bus and travelled to Florence.

We are in Florence now. We were in the square in Florence where there is a famous museum with the statue of Dante in one corner. Florence is famous for gold and leather. We saw a gold scarf. It was very heavy and quite amazing. Nan and Papa bought me a pair of high leather boots. They are very beautiful.

Florence is the home of Pinocchio. I sat on a bench with a Pinocchio and Papa took my picture.

We also saw a lot of horse drawn carts in Florence. People could take a ride in them, but we didn't. We walked around quite a bit on cobblestone walkways through very narrow streets.

We had a very good dinner. It started with lasagna and then we had chicken scallopini for a main course. Tiramisu was great for dessert.

I am looking forward to tomorrow.

Isn't Sienna a color..yellow / brown.. This is my guess.

I believe Dante was famous for his poetry.

The twins Romulus and Remus come from a foundation myth. A very interesting read. They were fathered by a god (either Mars or Hercules) and left to die as babes. A she-wolf found them and suckled them until they were fostered by a shepherd and his wife. They raised them into manhood and the story goes on...

Lynne, you are right about Dante. And we agree the story of Romulus and Remus is very interesting. We were intrigued that Rome was named after the twins.

Sienna is a yellowish-brown that almost looks orange. It is quite impressive to see an entire village all colored sienna.

Now about that horse races, anyone???

Lynne (anyone) on

The horse races have been around for 100s of years. The first 1 was held on July 2 in 1656 in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano then in 1701 they added the august 16 race which in honour of the Assumption of Mary.
The jockeys ride bareback through the Piazza del Campo, which lasts about 90 seconds..Crazy I say...lol
