Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa mark the beginning of Nelson Lakes National Park. The sleepy village of St. Arnaud is the gateway to this unspoilt and uncrowded mountain region. I am eager to climb some mountains and to inhale some of the fresh mountain air. The 4h St. Arnaud Range Track begins through lush beech forest and climbs to the range above 1700m from where there are stunning views. I scream it out, partially because I was completely running out of breath. I was a bit in a hurry due to my late start in the afternoon, you see. The next day, I start early to climb Mount Robert (1580m) from where the views on Nelson Lakes National Park are even better than from the St. Arnaud Range. No one around and the sound of silence. Great!
O yes, sandflies. Well they are nasty little flies which give nasty big bites that keep on itching for days. They especially like my feet. Time to start using that insect repellent!
