Crossing Cook Strait from Wellington to Picton is a bit like entering a new country. The Marlborough Sounds feature many inlets, bays and islands, which create a stunning scenery. For trampers, the Queen Charlotte Track is the most appealing attraction. You can walk the 71 km track from Ship Cove to Anakiwa in 3 to 4 days. The start of the track (Ship Cove) can only be reached by boat. For most of the track I walk together with a Dutch guy, 3 Germans girls and a Kiwi guy. The first day is mainly through the lush coastal forest, while on the second day there are great views on the Queen Charlotte Sound and Kenepuru Sound from the ridges.
The day-to-day distances and actual walking times were:

Day 1: Ship Cove to Mahana Lodge, 26.7 km, 6h45
Day 2: Mahana Lodge to Portage Bay, 23.6 km, 6h30
Day 3: Portage Bay to Anakiwa, 20.7 km, 4h15

It was an enjoyable track and a good training for my future hiking plans. yeah, the South Island rocks!
