We only had a couple of days in Monteverde, but it was a nice trip.  First, however, we had to get there.

3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon we got on a bus from Alajuela headed to Monteverde, with expected arrival around 6:30.  After many hours on the steep mountain road in first gear, we finally reached the town of Santa Elena, around 8pm.  I told Travis we have to run to catch a taxi because there aren't that many in town and when everyone gets off they all get taken.  So we run to the stop and find... no taxis.  We wait a few minutes and finally one comes.  I go over to talk to the guy and find out how much it would cost to take us to the lodge we wanted to stay at.  He says 800 colones (about $1.50).  I said no way, the lodge isn't that far, that's crazy.  So he leaves and I walk back over to Travis.  I explain what happened and that he wanted to charge us 800 but that sounded like alot, so we would wait for another one and ask again.  Travis looks at me like I am completely crazy and we wait again for another cab.  And wait.  And wait.  Nothing comes... so I suggest that we just walk it.   With our bags.  Up the steep mountain.  But it's not really that far - just uphill.  We walk, and walk, with all of our luggage, about 20 minutes until we get to the lodge where we didn't have reservations (Monteverde was a last minute decision).  We ring the bell.  Knock.  Yell "buenas".  Nada.  Nobody comes.  We left a note in the door, and went to dinner.

While at dinner I walked across the street to ask at a hotel about their rooms.  The guy says to me "You're looking for a room right now?  For tonight?  We're completely full this week.  Pura vida!".  I go back to the restaurant and break the news to Travis over some awesome white pizza.  We go back to the original lodge an hour later.  Same deal... and nothing.  Finally we give up and start walking down the dirt road in search of a place for the night.  By now its 9:30 pm and we have no place to stay.  We see a sign for a place called "Hotel Montana" and follow the signs down a path where we encounter this majestically beautiful hotel.  Once inside we find the night watchman and inquire about a room.  A few phone calls later and he finds us a room.  Double the price of the original lodge, but at least we saved on the taxi!  We settled in for the night and finally got some rest.

In the morning, we woke up to find the most amazing view in Santa Elena, right outside our door.  We could see the gulf of Nicoya from up there.  They said that breakfast is included and man was it good.  After we checked out we walked back to the original lodge where we had set up to catch the transport for the canopy tour.  It looked like someone was there so we started knocking again and finally found someone.  He hooked us up with a nice room and took our luggage for us.

SKYTREK... was great.  Check out the pictures.

After Skytrek/walk we met up with Kathy and Michy who were starting in their new assignments as temporary specials in Monteverde.  Dinner was amazing at a place called the Treehouse restaurant, there were even guys playing music.

The following morning we met the group at 7am for service... it was nice to go out in a cooler climate.  We preached in an area with alot of tourist attractions, so it was like tourist preaching.  We "saw" the butterfly garden and lots of pretty things.

At 2:30 pm we were back on the bus to San Jose.  We got in around 7 and headed to Grethel's house, toured Bethel in the morning and flew home the same day to the states.  How sad :-(   It was such an amazing month, hard to bring to a close.  Until next time!
