so we spent easter weekend in santiago with pedro and ana maria and family. it was very nice but i thought that there would be more fuss made over easter, what with it being a south american catholic country... but perhaps we were just far from the action? on saturday we went to the coast and pedro took us sailing - just me and gabbie and him. the wind was quite strong and the waves were rough but it looked like a great day for sailing, although me and G don't have a clue how to sail and so hardly make a reliable crew... any way it turned out to be much rougher than it seemed and the waves were crashing against, and not too infrequently on to, the boat and after a particularly scary, partially vertical moment, we decided to head back in to shore. we had lunch in quite wet clothes but it was very exciting!

we got the bus up to san pedro (in total the journey lasted over 24hrs). this morning - at 4am - we took a tour up to the el tatio geysers to see them at sunride (later on in the day the steam disappears and you can see them properly). the ride up in to the mountains was quite long and very very bumpy - too bumpy it would seem for a little american boy with a bowl hair cut who was sick and then said to his brother 'hey, i'm not in a real good mood'.
the geysers are 4300m above sea level and it was -8 degrees when we arrived so while we watched the earth bubbling and boiling we were loosing sensation in our hands and feet! we did get to swim in a thermal pool though which warmed us up a little. on the way back to san pedro we stopped occasionally at good 'photo oppurtunities' - i got really in to it and was acting like a right tourist. miss harriet would have been proud.
oh and then we ate llama - it was actually really nice!
