Can Tho is a great place to discover the Mekong Delta. Private boats for up to four people can be hired for a bargain price of 260,000 VND (or 10 EUR) for the entire day. Cruises start before sunrise, the latter is one of the high-lights and has to be observed while on the river, and end in the afternoon. The long-tail boat took us to two floating markets, definitely a spectacle for first-timers. It's funny to sea wooden sticks pointing towards the sky with a pineapple tide to them (a symbol for the merchandise available on the boat, that can be seen from a big distance), ppeople throwing & catching goods, or floating kitchens that supply the entire market with warm soup or coffee. Don't expect to much explanations from the driver (in our case a female), but she did a great job rowing through the tight water-alleys of the markets. The cruise continued with a stroll through narrow canals, behind the range of the typical (bigger) tourist boats. That offered close views on who people live in the Delta, and how much they rely on it. Almost everything is transported by water, from vegetables and living animals, to construction materials. Unfortunately, even body hygiene takes place in the murky waters of the Mekong, as do washing clothes or dishes. Yeah, you wined up eating at a touristy place, where all the long-tail boats stop, but nobody forces to stay.

The city itself isn't to crowded with tourists (only on the river-side) and we had great street-food for under 1 EUR.
