Day 7 - Canada

Just finished a steak and veges meal prepared by moi [that's French Canadian for me!] in our chateau [that's French Canadian for house] at Telegraph Cove, a beautiful little place in the north east of Vancouver Island. We're all settled in to our houses here.

The reason for travelling all the way north will be revealed tomorrow............

Today though we started at Nanaimo and went directly from our hotel [remember... The Dorchester] to a Canadian dining institution, Tim Hortons. Originally just a donut place it has evolved to a money making machine that sells a variety of breakfast bagels, pastries, donuts, sandwiches and, of course, coffee.

From there a local bird watching site; Buttertubs Marsh. Here we got great views of Northern Flicker [a woodpecker] and some lifers; Pied billed Grebe and, for one, Virginia Rail. I scored a good, though short, view of Musk Rat - a smaller longer tailed cousin of the beaver. We also got good views of spp not seen for a while like Wood Duck and Yellow warblers.

After leaving Nanaimo we headed north to Campbell River where, while we lunched on local fish and chips we saw seal, great views of Pacific Loon and a new trip bird, Common Merganser.

North from Campbell River we had a two hour drive to the picturesque Telegraph Cove. Particularly notable was our first [I say first because I'd like to see more] Black Bear! Good views near a road way. Well done to Norma who found it [Norma of the Ray - Stool comment fame]. Another Red breasted Sapsucker enroute as well as a nice dark phase Red tailed Hawk plus many Turkey Vultures and Bald Eagles.
