Well, never one to shrink away from the heat, off I went to the Dead Sea on Saturday. A group of new teachers met at school with passports in hand to journey to the sea. Once we left Amman, the scenery drastically changed from one of developed land to the desert and wide open spaces upon the hills. We saw some farming of bananas, pomegramettes, and some fresh flowers but saw quite of bit of Bedouin tents with herds of sheep and goats. Saw my first camels as we drove!! I now feel like I have arrived in a desert country! :-)

It took us about 45 minutes, 2 passport checks(we got waved through), and then figuring out which entrance we needed to go into the hotels. There is quite a selection of places to stay-Marriott, the Movenpik, the Kemplinski, and then the Dead Sea Spa all range about $150-$240 a night to stay at but you can also just pay a day fee to use the pools and beach access. We went to the Dead Sea Spa and paid 12JD to have access to the changing rooms and such. It's now 10:00am and at least 45C and more humid than anything I can imagine!!

Played around in the mud and floated around for a while in water that wasn't too cool but still was refreshing. The Sea is about 1400 feet below sea level and is three times as salty as the ocean. Trust me-you wouldn't want to gargle with this stuff! By noon we were to hot so we got ready and headed back to Amman. Had to use the turbo on our cars so that made it a bit uncomfortable as we climbed up the hills-this means no air!

After getting back to Amman, went home and graded papers. Oh, yeah, the joys of teaching!
