We stopped the tour guide to have him let us get out so that we could play in the snow, It was really cool seeing that we don't get much snow in Florida! LOL That's pretty much a given. One of the areas was called "Winter Park" oddly enough!
We tried making snow men, but the snow was way to powdery to even make much of a snowball. So I had to taste the snow. No, it wasn't yellow now, and I'm still here, so I guess it hadn?t been on the ground very long.
Our tour guide brought us past the two main roads in downtown, Jasper and Whyte. They are well-known for their shopping, cafes, and ice cream shops. Yes, ice cream in a climate that is as low as -40C at times in the year. Go figure!
We also went to the Legislature building, City Hall, and got to see the downtown College and the University of Alberta. The University is amazing in that it has world class heath care in cardiovascular research, lymphoma, and asthma. They are also well-known for their new nanotechnology and, of course, oil refinery.
We did get to see the Edmonton Oilers? hockey headquarters as we drove by it, but Wayne Gretzky isn?t there so I passed. I would have loved to get a chance to meet him!
The day ended with dinner at a Mediterranean / Italian restaurant with decent food. The hospitality industry has a lot to be desired up here, but hell, with less than a 2% unemployment rate, companies are begging for employees. The cost of living up here is really good. Everyone lives very well.
We were talking with a local, actually a transplant from Druidville, Quebec, between Quebec City and Montreal. He said that places are paying very high wages for employees. The city has more jobs than what the number of people. I told him that the reason is that they're all living in Florida! LOL One thing that was cool was that he brought us to the foot bridge that crosses the river. Wow it was cold with the wind blowing at about 10mph!
Tomorrow holds a day of roaming the mall for me. Sean will be at the conference, therefore, my day is free! Woo hoo! I get to buy stuff. Maybe I'll go see a movie at the IMAX theatre or buy myself some new jewellery :)
Tomorrow's another day
