We had another early morning short flight with a small airline company called REX and arrived bright and early to Kangaroo Island.  We lucked out and got the last rental SUV available on the island, which was very fortunate for us as they don't allow you to drive on gravel with a car.  The main roads are paved, but the smaller roads that lead to many of the great sights to see are gravel.  It wasn't long before we were on the dirt trails with our Rav4 (rental).  We started out our day by heading to a lavendar farm that was very close to the airport.  It wasn't open yet, so we detoured off on a road near there and found a field that had been seeded to Canola.  It looks like they grow quite a bit of canola here as well.

The lavender farm wasn't very big but the owner who toured us around was full of enthusiasm for his plants and products.  He was very informative about growing lavender and we got a few great tips!  It was a great smelling tour!  From here, we headed to a eucalyptus distillery.  There are many types of eucalyptus but the kind grown here is special to the island.  They distill the oil right from the farm and create lots of different products from it.  Then it was on to a honey farm--great tasting honey!!

Our next stop was Bales Beach.  It was a beautiful stretch of beach along the ocean that had huge waves.  There weren't a lot of people there, so it was like we had it all to ourselves.  A great place to be as the temperature reached 38C.

Then it was on to our accomodations near the National Park.  Had supper and then went on a night walk.  We saw kangaroos, wallabyes, koalas, and possum.  The guide was very informative about the animals and their habitat.  These animals are mostly nocturnal so the night time is the best time to see them.
