Woke up early to a completely different vista than the day before.  Sunlight drenched the hills and forests of the Cirque de Salzie, providing us with magnificent views of the rim of the ancient volcano.  It is still amazing to think that we were camped in the centre of an imense natural ampitheatre, created over thousands of years by water and geological forces.  We quickly prepared and downed breakfast, knowing that whilst the weather was great it can change very, very quickly up in the hills.  The walk back up to Hell-bourg did not seem quite as difficult, or as long, in the bright sunligh and we were able to observe the local Creole farmers going about their tasks with an almost casual determination as they tilled the rich volcanic soil.

Hell-bourg by day is wonderful.  Very French colonial architecture mingles seamlessly with Creole practicality, and like many poorer people the world over less is discarded and more reused in any way possible.  After our overpriced and frustrating keyboard session (see previous blog) we enjoyed another fantastic midday meal before heading just out of town to see what we thought were hot-springs.  No such luck.  Anciens Thermes really did indicate that they were historical and little remains of the baths where the richer classes would have taken their ease.  Still a lovely walk and more grist for Rhiannon's camera.

When we returned later to the camp we discovered that in addition to several more couples there was a large group of kids on a school camp.  Got my first overseas fix of fluent English.  Their teacher Noel not only spoke, and taught, the language but has also travelled in Australia.  I know that travelling is about different cultures and languages, however there is no substitute for advice in your own tounge.  We spent a pleasant evening cooking, talking and attempting to teach the more outgoing of the boys expressions and games.
