When we were organising our travels we wanted to see some festivals so we headed to Kalibo for the well known Ati Atihan Festival. A one and a half hour bus ride got us there and luckily we arrived at our hotel about one hour before it started otherwise we would have had to carry our backpacks as no traffic would have gotten through.
Mum had booked a place for us (I wasn't having much luck in English) one week in advance, but room rates are at least tripled so we paid a ridiculous amount for a room with shared bathroom and a small stand up fan. We were stoked by its location as it was over the main square where the festival was, but this also meant we were woken up by drums at 6am and were kept up until 2am by loud locals. The room was also extremely hot and we had to cool down by placing wet towels over us. Once the sun went down it was fine and once we found an airconditioned italian restaurant we were set. We spent about 3 hours having a very slow lunch so we wouldn't have to leave. The other plus side though was that we had the church right opposite us and were able to watch the fireworks over it one night.
On the second night of the festival we headed to the square to see some more bands (very very bad) and were all of sudden pushed to one side as everyone on the dance floor started to panic and run in our direction. We thought a bomb had gone off people looked so petrified but we think a firecracker was set off scaring the hell out of everyone.
It was a good festival but god it was hard work!!
