Day 2 All Aboard the Celebrity Century
Our captain is Captain Nikolas Christodoulakis who reminds me of a certain captain Christophe Alouette from the SS Commode at the Weybridge Mariners Club for those who attended the Murder Mystery night there last year!! ...But I am sure we are in safe hands!
Our stateroom on Deck 10 is charming and it was a delightful surprise to step into it and find it so cosy, compact and well presented down to the champagne on ice, fresh flowers and fruit awaiting us. Our stewards Javier and Marie are wonderful and promise to attend to our every need....Wow! We have a verandah so were able to sit out and sip our champagne as we left the port. The weather is being very kind to us at the moment and being the Inside Passage sailing is smooth.
We enjoyed a buffet lunch in the Sunset Bar in the aft of the ship before attending a talk on the possible excursions we may take at our various Ports of Call. We have decided on three excursions, one at each stop the first being a trip up the Spasski River Valley at Icy Strait Point on a Bear and Wildlife search. It is one of the many salmon streams on the Chichagof Island that sustain the population of Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears and so our chances of seeing some are quite high. The journey out to the river will give us a view of the glacier made landscape of evergreen forest and muskeg with a guide to take us on the ' Trail of the Bears' used for thousands of years by the wildlife. We have a naturalist on board who will give us more details in a lecture tomorrow meanwhile we are just enjoying the scenery of a misty landscape as we calmly cruise along the Inside Passage.
Our Dining Table is well situated at a big picture window at the aft of the ship and we have very good company in Kim and Helen from Calgary, Howard and Judy from Witney, Oxfordshire and Blair and Loretta from .Seskatchewan............. We also have a charming waiter Daje who is treating us like royalty....I think I could get used to this.
After dinner we went to the Celebrity Theatre to see a show with some amazing acrobatic ballet dancing and some energetic showtime musical song and dance routines and an amusing compere. Afterwards we chose to relax in the romantic ambiance of Michaels Bar and enjoy some piano playing and vocals with the smiling Carlos Avalon. It got quite jolly as the evening progressed and the small but select audience were joining in with the singing from well known musicals. All in all it was a great first day at sea and we were ready for our cosy cabin by midnight....most unusual for us to stay up so late but there is so much to see and do on board, we have yet to sample the delights of the Martini Ice Bar and the Jazz in the Cova Coffee Bar, We could get the chance to learn a language with Rosetta Stone and paint watercolours with an on board artist tomorrow and we haven't even been to the Spa yet. There is plenty of choice for all and the ship whilst not one of those mega floating hotel types has enough rooms to avoid the crowds who prefer the casino and disco dancing.
Tomorrow is our 4th wedding anniversary and we will be celebrating in style in the French Bistro restaurant Murano where we are hoping to sample the Alaskan Lobster. Yummy!!
