Where I stayed
Benidorm - The Tour
Pensioners Paradise!..You can hire a buggy for the day and drink Happy Hour from 10.a.m to 3.p.m. Be sung to in the street cafe by a wannabe 'Barry Manilow' in a purple shirt and watch the world go by which is nearly everyone over 60.
Ugly multi storey apartment blocks and hotels with no architectural flair. In fact there is nothing here to commend it except the sunshine which is why people come here including ourselves. The guide books tell us that the beach is one of the ten best in the world? Really? But culturally it has nothing to offer, it all appears cheap and nasty and vulgar is that really what British Tourism is about?
Our brief tour of the Benidorm is enough to decide us we don't need ever to come back except to pass through on the way south. They say Benidorm has re-invented itself since it's 70's reputation for lager louts but we think it's the same people coming back to re-live their youth in an electric buggy, still drinking the cheap lager.
There's a lot of ex-pats here with fancy 5th wheel trailers and large motorhomes worth well over 100,000 pounds that are their permanent homes we can't say we blame them for wanting to live in the sun but it couldn't ever be our lifestyle.
We are looking forward to spending the rest of our stay looking for the old-fashioned fishing ports if they still exist .We hear Altea is quite pleasant and has some old world charm, an unspoilt white washed town, sounds more like our kind of place.
