The Journey to Spain

Day One:
A delayed start to get a new exhaust fitted which incredibly took over a week to get right! We finally began our journey three days late and had to change our Ferry boking and accommodation dates to suit.
A good drive to Orne from the Ferry at Calais arriving just as the sun was setting. A well positioned campsite in the village of Logny de Perche, a place we hope to explore more on our return journey, but this stop-over was for one night only to try and make up lost time.
Day 2
It was a foggy frosty morning with bright sunshine trying to emerge through the freezing fog which unfortunately got denser as the day progressed. So no photos of this journey I'm afraid. It was over 300 miles to our next stop Ceyrat just south of Clermont Ferrand.
Some interesting shots I missed were of 1) a painted water tower with a beautiful landscaped mural.....how refreshingly different to graffitti.
2) A Heron standing by the roadside totally unphased by the traffic zooming pass.
3) Many birds of prey perched on fence posts scanning the fields for their next meal.
Despite the fog some good clear roads gave us excellent progress to arrive at the next site in daylight. Again Ceyrat looks an interesting town and we hope to explore it more on our return journey as this was just a one night stop-over to make up lost time. It will be February 14th when we return to this town so we hope it has a romantic bistro with good ambiance to offer us.
Day 3
We awoke to a flurry of snow like icing sugar on the ground, with a 285 mile journey ahead to Perpignan we set off early down the A75. As we climbed higher and higher into the range of hills Mont de la Margeride in Lozere towards St. Flour we reached upto 1200 metres and the snow falling more heavily. The roads needed much caution and we were reminded of this by the sight of a car that had just skidded into the barrier, and was a write-off.
Driving through a winter wonderland of pine forests may look pretty and Christmas card perfect but it is hard work concentrating on driving safely and we we realised we may have to stop on the way for shelter but were afraid to be caught and stranded in snow.
The snow ploughs were out in force and we were forced to travel at max. 40 miles an hour for safety. Fortunately there was not too much traffic on the road just the odd idiot that wanted to overtake at 80mph (usually someone in a BMW) forcing us to move over into the slushy lane of deeper snow where we might skid.
The mountainous terrain made it heavy going particularly uphill, ice forming on the windscreen... We saw a Buzzard in flight so close to us but were not quick enough to get the camera out; then a sign saying 'Wolves' near le Buissson...it's getting scary now!
Coming down to the Laguedoc Roussillon area through L'Aubrec to Millau the roads looked to get clearer but the snow persisted.
St Cyprien by the Sea: our last stop in France before Spain and we have bright sunshine!
We have travelled through sunshine, freezing fog, a snow blizzard in search of winter sun and now at last we think we may have found it. It is noticeably warmer here, we might even cast off one of our 5 winter layers now we're here. It's a little blustery but plenty of bright sunshine which cheers the soul.
Day 4
A beautiful morning, and much warmer than yesterday we now only have three layers of clothing on. A rainbow apppears in the sky as a sign of 'Good Luck' to come despite our Sat Nav taking us on a magical mystery tour to get out of St Cyprien.

Sunshine all the way into Spain and beyond. Barcelona! Why is it everytime we see that sign we have to start singing at the tops of our voices
Barcelona!...
..Barcelona.!.....
Barcelona!
Oh Sunny Spain you do not disappoint us, and we arrive at Benicassim in full sunshine delighted to begin our relaxing holiday right here.
