Friday

We went on a drive through the hills today chauffered by Margaret, and tourguide Dave!
Through mountainside villages and up the valley of the River Boina climbing into the hills and woodlands, lots of orange groves. There was a market in Monchique, the highest village in the Algarve. The market wasn't up to much in our opinion it was all knickers and socks and strange agricultural equipment. We were amazed to see some very sharp scythes and knives on sale, I am assuming they don't have a gang culture here.
The highlight of the market for us was the herd of goats that appeared from nowhere and came careering down the hillside; about thirty strong with some very strange curly horns, quite delightful.
From there we went to up Foia through woodlands to the summit, unfortunately a little misty up there so difficult to get a good picture, but we could just see the coastline from this point and need to get back up here early one morning to get a clearer picture. There was however a restaurant at the top where we had a snack and a glass of wine by a raging but smoky fire; also bought some souvenirs amongst which was the inevitable pottery candle holder and including a nice bottle of white port.
On the way down we stopped at Caldas de Monchique a spa village where obviously the other half go for their spa treatments and to drink the waters in one of the very posh hotels there. It was extemely nice and maybe we'll sneak back and treat ourselves while we are here.
It did get very cold up in the mountains and we were glad to find there was still some sunshine when we got back to the campsite.
We had a lovely evening at the Rally American supper where we played the chimes to a standard that was recognised by the audience and Dave told a naughty story that was appreciated by everyone. Margaret sang some folk songs there were a few stories told. Fascinating stuff really.
All in all - a good day. Bom dias!
