Ciao! Apparently to say hello and to say goodbye!....Matt and I have been in Italy since yesterday when we arrived from Cannes to Torino, the Olympic city of this past winter. Torino was SO clean and beautiful, nestled at the edge of the Italian Alps, which we had the most insane view of as our train wound through them en route from south France to Italy. It is kind of strange that Matt and I are seeing the Italian and French Alps (and the Spanish Pyrennes) before the Canadian Rockies (maybe next summer); but they really took our breath away and maybe its because we have never seen mountains before, I'm not sure - but it was amazing. The train was literally CHUGGING uphill and winding through the craziest heights....we heard that Austria will be even better for train engineering and cannot imagine what that will be like after this!
We had dinner at the main square in Torino which was once the capital of Italy just after it unified in the 1870s (roughly the same time as Germany)...the area is known as Piedmont and Savoy and was actually once dominated by good ol Napoleon whose only remaining structure was a bridge that he had built across the Po River into the main Piazza. The bridge was left by the Italians after Napoleons defeat so that they could literally "walk on" the French domination. (This was according to a tourist info sign at the bridge). We saw the famous Museum of Cinema which is the most notable building and drank a mojito (or two) in the club district which is actually under the buildings the city against the river bank....very cool. One of the clubs was playing Damien Marley and that filled my heart with warmth! lol.
And so after a nice day in Torino we are today in Milano! Ah Milano! Where I can't go into a Il Duomo (the cathedral) with a tank top on! No worries, Matt went in and I will go back tomorrow - covered more..they don't let anyone, men or women, with tank tops or shorts or skirts....very strict! We also saw the castle in the city, the Leonardo da Vinci statue, and the shopping galleria which beats the one in Brussels by a LONG shot. We ate some gelato and drank REAL cappuccinos...so Italy has been treating us well!
More adventures in Milano tomorrow and then ROMA....
Ciao! Love, Kaylea and Matt
