An exciting start to our day in Galle in Sri Lanks. We were moored off shore and had to take a tender to the port in a six foot swell!! Very interesting getting on and off the tenders from the ship's docking platforms.
However it was all worthwhile. This is a beautiful, charming place with a much more relaxed feel to the hustle of places like Penang and Kuala Lumpur. We visited the old Fort built originally by the Dutch and improved by the British. This area was hit by the tsunami of 2004 but the thick walls saved the town and now the Dutch government are putting money into restoring the old town which is UNESCO listed. Inside the fort we looked around a Dutch church with some very interesting gravestones and were asked to make a donation to the church to take photographs. Thinking Rob had given me local money I put a note in the box only to discover I had given them $10 US. Rob says I'm not allowed to carry any more money.
On to a local handicraft centre where people were producing lace and batik and making jewellery. Some amazing lace makers - so skillful. We bought a little batik square with tropical fruit pattern.
Next stop a photo opportunity to see some fishermen on stilts which are unique to the area. Not sure how authentic it is - the fish they catch are tiny but it was very colourful with the turquoise sea and the palm fringed beach.
Last and best of all was a cultural show of local dancers and drummers. The costumes were wonderful with lots of detailed decoration and brilliant masks. One very clever young man spun several disks on some spikes he was holding as he danced.
Then back to the ship where we had a long wait for the tender as it was taking so long to transfer to the ship and we were very glad to be safely back on board.
