Ok, so I'm a tad superstitious...

It happened last night, after the house sitters had been through all the rigmarole of looking after our four fur babies, and multitudes of finned babies. After the ubiquitous family farewell dinner.

It was as I was trying to print out the pages of instructions on Darcie's special diet, and how many pellets Shane's catfish need. That's when I noticed it...

My lucky quarter had disappeared!

I've had this quarter sitting on my bedside for over two years - since the last time we travelled to the U S of A. Never once has it moved, always a steadfast reminder of our wonderful memories, and a promise to one day go back.

But on the eve of our return to the land of red, white and blue, I grabbed the little coin and took it into the study so I could scratch and reveal the codes for some iTunes vouchers that I intended to spend on in flight entertainment on my iPad.

Why? WHY did I choose this particular night to move my lucky quarter from its place of safety???

I frantically turned the study upside down while wildly accusing Shane of thoughtlessly banking the coin (which had taken on magical properties all of a sudden) in our shrapnel tin. I was convinced that we simply couldn't possibly leave the house without having the coin with us. Something terrible was bound to happen if the coin wasn't found.

Over an hour later, there was still no sign of the coin. I was exhausted, overwrought and very reluctantly admitting defeat. I brushed my teeth, climbed into my jammy-jams and took myself to bed, trying not to think about the kind of bad luck that was in all likelihood speeding towards me like a runaway train.

But wait - what was that!? Sitting on the bedside, just as it had for more than two years, was my lucky coin!!!

Was something out there looking out for me? Was Shane playing a nasty trick? Or had I simply had a blonde moment?

We may never know... But one thing I do know is that my lucky quarter is in my backpack right now, being guarded heavily by Huggtopus (more on him later). As I wait at the boarding gate, I know all will be wonderful!!!
