Just last Saturday I was sporting a skirt, flops and a tank in Asuncion bargaining with scalpers on the streets of Asuncion in hopes of getting a decently priced ticket to the Paraguay Brasil soccer game coming up in a few weeks... the tickets sold out in a few hours, my bus 6 hours south of the capital did not make it in time!
Now I sit bundled in long johns, smart wool socks, three fleeces, gloves, a hat and two scarfs...or is it scarves, the english language is lost to me in print...
The weather has dropped about 60 degrees in just about 7 days. Althogh its only about 40 degrees out, there is absolutely no insulation in the homes or schools here, so there is little relief entering places...even ones bedroom. My thermometer tells me its 53 in my room, now that is dang cold. Fortunately, I do have hot water, for about 5 minutes before the electric in my entire house cuts...it drizzles out, but it is hot, nearly scalding...
Life is good. I´m in a fairly set routine, schedule here in Bogado (my town). I have school Monday thru Thursday. I am still focusing on Lectura, which is reading, teaching to read, comprehension etc in the classroom. I´m now doing 2 through 6th grade and really getting in to it, as are the kids. You forget how important being literate is until you enter a 6th grade classroom and realize the majority don´t know their letters. I am doing mostly pictre books awith the little guys and having them make their own books and stories. With the 5th and 6th graders I am reading Tresure Island and the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe... which has truly been amazing. Their imaginations are just blown as we talk about the world of Narnia, good stuff.
Recently discovered that puzzles are not part of everyones upbringing and making them out of white paper and having kids put together puzzles in groups is entertaining, if nothing else.
Sex Ed with the lovely ladies of tercer ciclo, 7, 8, 9 grade is going well. We make about three steps forward then one back, which I say is just fine. Not sure if I already blogged about my lovely drawings of the female anatomy on charla paper and explained the entire menstrual cycle, fallopian tubes and the like and after class I was reading my anonymous questions from the question box and there were numerous questions, inclding but not limited to....ïs that thing you drew in our bodies? what was that?.... We´ll be talking about pregnancy and prevention in the upcoming weeks and ideal boyfriends, hey thats important stuff to talk about, haha!
Youth groups are going well, still planting trees by the dozens and we´ve just started up a radio program in site, hoping that works out. We´ve had a great response to the 8 scholarships we gave out for university.
Can´t believe my days and months are dwindling down...slowly... I have just about 10 months left in Paraguay, which jst doesn´t seem like enough time.
I´m heading back to Buenos Aires in about 3 weeks with Maureen, which I am really looking forward to!
