Where I stayed
Today I check out of the Tropical Bali hotel having had a wonderful stay with Mathias and Florence. Although I'm moving only a short drive away.. the tour begins here in Sanur. This tour is going to show me the real Bali and more and I'm looking forward to meeting other travellers.
After breakfast and shower its time to say farewell... I cannot recommend this home stay enough, the calming, relaxing atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle, a truly relaxing environment and one very much needed after the amount of time I've been travelling. Its so good to take some time out and enjoy the moment rather than moving constantly from one place to another
I check out... well try but unfortunately Mathias doesn't take cards... and despite being a millionaire with the Indonesia currency.. I don't have enough.... and so Mathias very kindly offers me his moped.... hhmmm think maybe I'll walk... but he insists... have yet to tell him I've never driven one before... perhaps I'll hold that thought!!! So off I go.... OMG and Sanur is apparently calmer on the roads than that of Kuta and surrounding areas... Mathias advice... stay on the left and go slow.... but what about corners???!!! It was to say the very least an unexpected adventure... and yes I coped and actually enjoyed it... although the roads are completely mental here... I survived.... but more importantly so did Mathias bike.... I then am able to pay him... even though I had to query the bill... as much as I'd like to say I had beers, beers and more beers... it wasn't me...honestly (despite the need for one now!) he apologises profusely and all is fine... than its a wait for a taxi... safer with my luggage!!!
And so its off to the Puri Kelapa gardens.....another tropical hideaway at the heart of one of the island's most colorful Hindu communities. It is also minutes from the world famous sun-rise beach which I visited yesterday so that will be worth an early morning call
The setting is cooled by Indian Ocean breeze filtering through coconut palms, the secluded swimming pool and thatched bungalows and rooms nestle amongst exotic flowers and fruit trees.
On arrival I am not disappointed! The room is OK, it does need a bit of TLC but overall the location and setting is lovely. I drop my bag in and head back to the glasshouse for lunch... this time the owner is there and we chat and she tells me her future plans... she's Australian and it was nice to chat. I also relented and had the carrot cake... OMG it was divine.... that and the two banana smoothies I had too!
Back at the hotel and I meet my room mate Carmen, a criminal psychologist working in a prison from Cape Town, South Africa. We head out and I show her around and the beach and town.... we did kind of loose track of time as we then realized it was time for our tour meeting... rushing back making it just a few minutes late... ooopsss!!
We meet the group... although some are leaving tonight, some are continuing and finish in a week then there will be a few new ones. The group consists of all girls, a first our tour leader Dara informs us. She herself is American from Orlando, Florida and has been touring Indonesia and Asia for years!!
After introductions its off for a group dinner at a lovely restaurant and we experience the delightful Indonesian food... its a great night getting to know everyone.. there will be 9 different nationalities on this tour.. so should be good!!
