Up at 8:30 this morning. We got ready and I had weetabix and an apple for breakfast. We left around 10. Traveling up and through the mountains was very desolate, with not much plant life, except some grass, but always lots of waterfalls.

I used the time to catch up my diary as we drove. We decided to go to Lake Myvatn first instead of Dettifoss and then do the long road up via H˙savik. We stopped briefly just before Myvatn at Hverir to see the hot springs.

We arrived in Lake Myvatn around 12:20. We stopped at a lookout over Myvatn and saw lots of electricity generating plants. We then went into the town and used the toilets at the information centre and bought something to eat for lunch at the supermarket.

We took a short drive through the town then back out to Dimmuborgir. Here the Midge's were bad when the breeze was not blowing. I wore my jacket hood around my ears to keep them out!  We did a short 15 minute walk here through the lava formations. We also saw Hverfjall.

We ate part of our lunch here, I had a pizza bread, but the midges were getting into the food so we decided to eat in the car instead. We left Dimmuborgir at about 1:15 and Myvatn and drove up the mountain past the power station. Next stop 1:45 at Vita, Krafla volcanos flooded crater. Here we ate our skyr.

We stopped on the way back at a hot spring shower and toilet set up in the middle of nowhere on the side of the road! A must have photo opportunity! We then backtracked a little to get to the road to Dettifoss.

We arrived at Dettifoss at about 2.30. It was a bit of a walk through a boulder field where you can see the remnants of a catastrophic flood that carried rocks down the valley from a glacier.

We walked down to the river and saw Dettifoss. There was a beautiful rainbow hanging in Dettifoss's mist. It looked like there was a naked lady on the opposite bank getting photographed next to the falls. We thought she might fall in she got so close to the water.

We walked down close to the waterfall and got some pictures and then back to the car where we drove back to the turnoff to Hafragilsfoss. A nice waterfall but a very impressive view of J÷kulsßrglj˙fur.

We left here around 2:30 for the fairly long drive on a dirt road to ┴sbyrgi. When we arrived around 4:30 we did the walk down to the pond at the far end of ┴sbyrgi. What a beautiful spot. We also did the short walk up the stairs to a good viewpoint looking back up the canyon.

We had driven past Hljˇdaklettar turn off on the way to ┴sbyrgi, so decided to backtrack here for a look once we had finished. We did the 1 hour ring route walk past the church. The geological rock formations were very impressive!

We then drove on towards H˙savik. We arrived at 7:30 but didn't stop in H˙savik and instead admired the beautiful landscapes from the car. Green fields and a big blue ocean and snow covered mountains in the background, amazing! We didn't see any whales, and the ocean looked so calm and flat.

Our next stop was at Godafoss at 8:10, a very beautiful waterfall close to highway 1. We had to backtrack a little when we reached highway 1 to get here. We drove on to Akureyri and arrived around 9. We went for a drive past the church for a look and also the harbour. We wanted to get something for dinner and settled on the AK-INN. A take away joint like McDonalds. I had a toasted ham and cheese sandwich combo which was ok.

We drove on out of Akureyri to Guddis's Aunty and Uncles farm, about a 15 minute drive out in a valley. When we arrived we sat down and had some dessert and they chatted with Guddis. They invited us to stay, so we grabbed our things and they gave us rooms upstairs.

I had a shower in the bath tub using a hand held shower head which was interesting! Then upstairs to bed around 12:30.
