Off down to do the Southwest now. I'm headed back out with the same gang (and company) I had been up north with before - they were all so nice so we wanted to stay together. Only prob is that I ran out of time really so had to do it slightly rushed! Anyway, on Sat we drove down to Bunbury. It's a really lovely town with plenty to do (compareed with further north). We even got excited at the sight of shops and a cinema...wow!!!!
Anyway, we just chilled out here and pottered around the town. In the evening we stayed at the hostel with pizza and drinks, and ended up playing a hilarious drinking game....this resulting in us girls deciding to hit the town! We had a fab time and really enjoyed ourselves but certainly didn't enjoy the following day in the heat with hangovers! This was Sunday, and we climbed up a cool lookout tower which had amazing views. I then went to the Dolphin Discovery Centre (nicknamed by our driver the 'Undiscovery Centre' as there are never any dolphins there!!) Anyway, we learnt some more about them and watched a film about their lives which was really interesting. In the evening we had a bbq at the hostel. Us girls had chicken, but the boys had a huge fish platter. They bought virtually every type of fish from the supermarket as it's so cheap. It did look amazing, but I still stand by the fact that squid rings look like hair bands!!
On Mon we headed to Margaret River. On the way we went and saw Bussleton - famous for the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, some amazing caves (85% humidity...nice)and Surfer's point (Lucy K, think Point Break!). There were loads of people Kite dsurfing here - it's really cool to watch. I didn't get to do the wine tasting in Marg River which was sad, but we all went out in the evening to the local pub that do amazing food on the cheap. It also happened to be Karaoke night - so funny - all the old aussie men singing so passionately, but not anywhere near in the right tune (and no I didn't have a go - you know me....no singing in public!)
Tues - More caves, Karri Tree Forests, Port Augusta, Cape Leeuwin (this is where the Southern & Indian Oceans meet - v cool and dramatic coastline.) Saw the 'Gloucester Tree' - 61metres high. You can climb it but it v.scary so of course I didn't! Then the Valley of the Giants - Tree top walk (think 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Outta Here' - v cool too, except when the boys decided to shake the walkway as we were on it.
Then to Elephant Rocks, through Denmark adn arrived in the old whaling town of Albany. This is where all the ships full of young Aussie men left to head to Galipolli for the 1st world war (most of whom died apparently - wish I'd listened in history at school!)
Wed - drove around Albany to nearby cape to see coastal stuff ('Gap' & 'Natural Bridge') Shame about the weather though - it's been cloudy for a couple of days now. On the way back to Perth (only 406km!!) we went through the Mount Barker wine region and had a taste of Goundrey wines (apparently they've just started exporting to the UK and can be found in Somerfield - I can recommend the Cabernet Classic White!!!!!!!!)
Off to Alice Springs on Fri so watch this space xx
